Q: does the mattress fit flush against the headboard or does it recess in 
A: Its going to be flush. I do not have the headboard attached to my frame, even if it was attached, it would still be flush (because there is a wood panel keeping it from being recessed). The only problem i have found with NOT attaching the headboard (and therefore having it raised off the floor and making the Shelves sit up higher), is that my pillows often end up jammed up in the shelves....otherwise, there are many benefits to NOT attaching the headboard.
